Those students fortunate to witness Sabum Lau successfully grade to 5^th Dan in Brisbane were indeed privileged. It was a test fit for a 30 something year old student but that did not deter a mentally and physically prepared Sabum Lau. Whilst I reside in Thailand I am kept up to date with all that happens during a monthly video conference with Sabums, Coleman, Richardson and Dieben. I was made aware of the significant preparations that commenced in earnest 12 months prior to the test.

Jump Turning Kick

It was a case of returning the favor for Sabum Richardson who was supported by Sabum Lau in the lead up to his 5^th Dan test in 2008. I understand that the running, swimming and cycling sessions often commenced at 5:30am not more than an hour after Sabum Richardson completed his night shift at work.

2 on 1 Sparring

I am sure Senior Master Lai and Sabum Lai (6^th Dan) who conducted the test were very impressed with the technical standard and the Indomitable Spirit demonstrated by Sabum Lau. The test for those wondering about what is in store for them included:
8 Tuls, three by 2 minute rounds of one on one free sparring, one two minute of one against two free sparring, step sparring against multiple attackers, power break, combination breaks and an overhead kick. In addition a verbal theory test was conducted at the conclusion of the physical test.

Until you reach the Dan level training is very much an activity for fitness, self-defence or even weight loss. The expectation of both the Academy and the ITF is that Black Belts do their best to not only continue to study but to also make a commitment to instruct and encourage juniors by way of example. Sabum Lau has for more than 20 years set a remarkable example as a Taekwon-Do Instructor, businessman and father. I am sure there are many students who owe him a debt of gratitude for his genuine efforts to help them reach their goals.
