Umpire B Course
22 Black Belts from across the State attended the course conducted by Senior Master Lai and 6th Dan Sabum Lai in Brisbane. Whilst a number of QSDTA senior Instructors have completed umpire courses in the past and officiated at competitions, none have applied for official certification.

It is now a constitutional requirement that officials at sanctioned competitions must hold ITF certificates for the appropriate level of umpiring / judging. Black Belts who hold an Umpire B certificate can officiate at State and National competitions in their country.
Whilst the Academy has historically not participated in competitions I believe that the new rules and stability of the AAITF provide the right environment for our students to get involved both as competitors and officials.

Round 2
In addition the resources within the Academy by way of senior instructors will allow the development of competition specific classes. The instructors in each region will be 4th Dan or senior and holders of the appropriate coaching qualifications and umpire certification. The separate classes will be conducted for those students wishing to participate in competitions however it will be a requirement that they continue with traditional lessons.

Taking notes Umpire Course 19 Dec 09
The National Championships and Australian Senior team selections will be held in Brisbane late in 2010 and will be the goal for those competitors and officials wishing to enter this new area of their studies. Leading up to the Nationals and Selections will be a number of minor less serious events that will be used as try outs. Local, inter-regional and perhaps an official AAITF Queensland State Championship will provide exposure to the competitive environment.

Tuls
The categories of competition will vary depending on the grade / Dan of competitors invited to compete. Generally there will be Tuls, Self-Defence, Power Breaking, Special Techniques and Sparring categories. Sparring competitively requires a significantly different approach to traditional sparring and will take newcomers some time to adapt.
The Black Belt camp in April will provide the opportunity for me to elaborate on how we will develop the competitive aspect within the Academy. It is essential that the high moral standards established over 30 years are not eroded in the quest for personal recognition.
